VS and VVS2 are often compared as though they were equivalent labels, but they refer to different levels of the diamond clarity scale. VS is a category containing VS1 and VS2. VVS2 is one specific grade within the VVS category.
Both terms describe characteristics evaluated under 10× magnification. The difference lies in how readily a skilled grader can find and assess those characteristics.
What clarity means
Diamond clarity considers internal characteristics, known as inclusions, and surface characteristics, known as blemishes.
Graders consider their size, number, location, relief, and nature. Clarity is not simply a count: a small characteristic in a prominent location can affect the assessment differently from several less noticeable characteristics.
What VVS2 means
VVS stands for very, very slightly included. The category contains VVS1 and VVS2.
VVS characteristics are minute and difficult for a skilled grader to see at 10× magnification. VVS2 follows VVS1 on the clarity scale.

Does a higher clarity grade always look different?
A higher clarity grade means the characteristics are less readily seen during grading. It does not describe the diamond's cut, color, size, or overall light performance.
Differences found at 10× magnification are not automatically obvious without magnification. Face-up appearance also depends on the individual diamond's shape, cut, proportions, size, and the location and contrast of its clarity characteristics.
What does “eye-clean” mean?
“Eye-clean” is an informal description, not a clarity grade. It usually means that inclusions are not readily visible without magnification under a stated set of viewing conditions. Distance, lighting, eyesight, diamond size, and viewing angle can all affect that judgment.
