A diamond grading report records the characteristics evaluated by a gemological laboratory at the time of grading. It is a technical description of the examined diamond, not a jewelry appraisal or a guarantee of market value.

What a report can contain

The exact layout depends on the laboratory and report type, but common fields include:

  • A report number
  • Diamond measurements and carat weight
  • Color and clarity grades
  • Shape and cutting style
  • Cut, polish, and symmetry information when applicable
  • Fluorescence observations
  • Growth method and treatment disclosures for a lab-grown diamond
  • A plotted or written description of identifying characteristics

Not every report contains every field. Read the report itself rather than assuming that one laboratory's format applies to another.

How to read the grades

Color, clarity, and carat describe different characteristics. Cut information addresses proportions and finish for the shapes and report types where a cut grade is assigned.

These details work together. Two diamonds with matching color and clarity grades can still differ in dimensions, proportions, and visible appearance. Use the grades to organize a comparison, then consider the complete diamond and setting.

Match the report to the diamond

A report number identifies the grading document. Some laboratories also provide an online report-check service. When a report number is available, compare the laboratory name and report details with the information supplied for the diamond.

A grading report describes the loose diamond as examined by the laboratory. The finished jewelry may have additional specifications—such as setting style, gold color, total carat weight, and dimensions—that appear separately on the product page.

Is a report included?

Report availability can vary by product. When a grading report is included with a Mythara piece, the product page is the place to confirm that fact and review any available laboratory or report details. The absence of report information on one product should not be interpreted as a promise that a report will be supplied.
