What 14K gold means

Karat describes the proportion of gold in an alloy. Fourteen-karat gold contains approximately 58.3% gold; other metals make up the remainder of the alloy.

Because 14K gold is an alloy, solid gold does not mean pure 24K gold. It means the identified part is made from gold alloy rather than described only as having a thin gold-plated surface.

14K gold, 10K gold, and plating

Ten-karat gold contains a lower proportion of gold than 14K. Gold-plated jewelry instead has a layer of gold applied over another material. These are different material descriptions, so read the complete statement rather than relying on the word “gold” alone.
